Cross-talk between metabolism bone homeostasis and inflammation

Diätwirkung im Knochen: (A) Anstieg von Adipozyten Zellen bei einer normalen Ernährung; (B) bei fetthaltiger Ernährung.

Head: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Aline Bozec

Diabetes, osteoporosis and inflammation used common molecular pathways, which are only understood in part to date.

Our group is looking for new target genes which could link obesity and diabetes to osteoporosis on one side and to inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis on the other side. To do so, we are analyzing the role of AP-1 transcription factor complex, on metabolism, bone physiology and inflammation. We herby follow genetic approaches to identify key targets genes downstream of Fra-2/AP-1 transcription factor which are involved in fat cell (adipocyte) and bone cell differentiation. The results obtained from these studies will allow a better identification of the mechanisms regulating the interplay between metabolism, bone and inflammation. This will provide a useful approach identifying new markers and treatment strategies for diabetes, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Furthermore, our group is studying the mechanisms of bone metastasis. Currently, we are focussing on the bone micro- environment, which provides a niche for tumour cells homing to the bone. Indeed, bone metastasis is associated with poor prognosis. Thus analyses of how bone provides a suitable micro-environment for the tumour cells is of key importance and we are thereby focussing our research on the role of AP-1, in this process (Immunophysics).
