In 2015, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) approved the collaborative research project NEUROIMPA: Neuroimmunology and Pain within the research network "Musculoskeletal Diseases". This nationwide, interdisciplinary consortium has the objective, to investigate the interaction between the immune and the nervous system in order to develop new therapies for pain management.
As part of our sub-project, in close cooperation with the Institute of Pharmacology, we investigate the impact of a cytokine neutralizing therapy on pain reduction and pain-associated brain activity in chronic arthritis by using magnetic resonance tomography. We also examine if changes in the brain can be detected in chronic arthritis and if therapeutic inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines can reverse these alterations.
