Interdisciplinary cell and tissue immunology

We investigate the processes underlying autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. We are working to understand why inflammation becomes chronic, why patients do not respond to certain medications, and why relapses occur. In addition, we analyse tissue regeneration during remission and tissue damage during a relapse.

We focus our research on various tissues such as bone, joints, skin, lungs and the gut, where communication between organs is of crucial importance. We concentrate on studies into the dysregulation of immune metabolism, in which we investigate how the interplay between tissue interaction and metabolism contributes to the development, progression or healing of diseases.

We are investigating how different tissues – such as bone, joints and connective tissue – as well as organs, communicate with one another. In doing so, we are also examining how metabolic processes in the organs and tissues play a central role. Metabolic processes influence how organs respond to immunological signals, provide energy and regulate inflammation. In this way, we investigate how the interplay between tissue interaction and metabolism contributes to the development, progression or healing of diseases.

Translational immunology and system medicine

Our aim is to develop new therapeutic methods that specifically modulate the immune system. These include modern approaches such as specialised cell therapies, which can have a positive impact on the course of the disease.
